Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students who get caught in repetitive thinking, replay conversations, repeatedly check their work, or seek reassurance before moving forward. This session focuses on understanding what these patterns accomplish for the student and choosing a response that supports both connection and school participation.
Participants will learn to distinguish productive problem solving from worry, rumination, mental checking, and reassurance seeking. We’ll examine when students need clarification or additional support and when repeated reassurance may provide brief relief without helping them take the next step.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice validating distress, providing necessary information, and helping students use a manageable action plan while some uncertainty remains. The session also addresses coordination with teachers and caregivers, monitoring progress, and recognizing when consultation or additional assessment is needed.

-
Develop a brief school participation plan that includes student practice, adult responsibilities, progress monitoring, and criteria for continuing, adapting, or seeking additional support.
