Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students who have difficulty beginning school tasks—even when they care about the outcome or can explain what they need to do. This session focuses on understanding the moment between a task becoming available and the student taking a useful first action.
Participants will learn to distinguish difficulty getting started from barriers involving task understanding, access, continuing the work, or submitting a completed assignment. We’ll examine how unclear first steps, competing demands, expectations about performance, and uncomfortable feelings can contribute to delay, then use that information to design support that fits the student and the task.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice building a start plan with a recognizable cue, a manageable first action, and feasible support. The session also addresses rehearsal, classroom and home coordination, help-seeking and restarting, and progress monitoring across actual work opportunities. Participants will learn to use follow-up information to refine the plan rather than simply repeat reminders to “get started.”
