Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students when a mistake, correction, or feedback leads to distress, arguments, repeated restarting, or difficulty returning to a task. This session focuses on understanding what the experience means to the student and helping them find a supported next step toward learning.
Participants will examine how self-critical thinking, expectations about performance, fear of embarrassment, and instructional confusion can influence a student’s response. We’ll also consider the clarity, accessibility, and delivery of feedback itself so that support addresses both the student’s needs and the conditions surrounding the interaction.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice helping students manage the initial emotional response, clarify what needs attention, and choose an appropriate action. That action might include revising one part of an assignment, asking a question, taking a planned pause and returning, or respectfully requesting a review. The session also addresses supported practice, coordination with teachers and caregivers, and monitoring progress without requiring students to hide disappointment or immediately agree with every correction.
