Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students when changed plans, unmet expectations, turn-taking, or unexpected outcomes lead to frustration and difficulty moving forward. This session focuses on understanding the concern behind “That’s not fair!” and helping students develop workable responses while preserving their ability to ask questions, communicate needs, and advocate for themselves.
Participants will learn to distinguish ordinary disappointment from unclear expectations, missing supports, and possible inequity or harm. We’ll examine how to acknowledge a student’s experience, clarify what happened, and identify whether the next step calls for adaptation, additional information, support, or adult action.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice helping students consider alternatives, ask clarification questions, use supported waiting and transition plans, and request a review when appropriate. The session also addresses predictable flexibility practice, coordination with teachers and caregivers, and follow-up that examines both student participation and adult responsibilities. Building flexibility includes expanding students’ options while keeping necessary supports available.
