Feedback and Mistakes: Helping Students Handle Correction, Being Wrong, and Trying Again Webinar
Format: On-Demand Webinar Replay (approximately 60 minutes)
NBCC Clock Hours: This is a recorded webinar and is not eligible for NBCC clock hours.
Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students when mistakes, corrections, or feedback lead to distress, arguments, repeated restarting, or difficulty returning to a task. This session focuses on understanding what makes these experiences challenging for students and helping them develop the skills to respond to feedback and continue learning.
Participants will examine how self-critical thinking, expectations about performance, fear of embarrassment, and instructional confusion can influence students' responses to mistakes and correction. We'll also consider how the clarity, accessibility, and delivery of feedback can affect students' ability to understand and use it effectively.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice helping students manage emotional responses, clarify feedback, and identify appropriate next steps. Strategies include helping students revise work, ask clarifying questions, take planned breaks and return to tasks, and respectfully advocate for their needs. The session also addresses coordination with teachers and caregivers, supported practice, and monitoring progress while allowing students to experience disappointment and develop greater confidence in navigating mistakes.
