Program Description

In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore the relationship between executive function (EF) and emotional regulation and discover why stress predictably disrupts the very skills we work so hard to teach. This session provides a practical framework for designing and delivering interventions that account for how the stressed brain actually works.

Participants will learn why students may struggle to access executive functioning skills during moments of stress, how the Window of Tolerance influences learning and behavior, and practical strategies for supporting regulation before expecting skill use. The session combines neuroscience-informed concepts with immediately applicable school counseling practices that can be used in individual counseling, small groups, classrooms, and consultation.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify how acute and chronic stress disrupt working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility in school-aged children.

  • Describe the Window of Tolerance and its implications for when skill instruction and skill use are neurologically possible.

  • Use at least two evidence-based co-regulation strategies to support students who are outside their window of tolerance.
