Program Description: In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will learn why avoidance is so powerful, what maintains it across settings, and how to build the clinical skill set that changes it. Participants will leave with a concrete understanding of the avoidance cycle, five evidence-based distress tolerance strategy categories adapted for school settings, and a practical graded exposure planning tool for building approach behavior one step at a time.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the avoidance cycle and the role of negative reinforcement in maintaining avoidance behavior in school-aged children.
  • Identify at least 3 evidence-based distress tolerance strategies appropriate for elementary and middle school settings, including developmentally appropriate adaptations.
