Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will learn why avoidance is so powerful, what maintains it across settings, and how to build the clinical skill set that changes it. Participants will leave with a concrete understanding of the avoidance cycle, evidence-based distress tolerance strategies adapted for school settings, and a practical graded exposure planning tool for building approach behavior one step at a time.
This session explores the behavioral and emotional processes that keep avoidance in place and examines why well-intentioned accommodations can sometimes unintentionally strengthen anxiety and avoidance patterns. Participants will learn how to help students tolerate discomfort, increase willingness to engage with challenging situations, and gradually build confidence through structured, developmentally appropriate exposure and coping strategies.
