Program Description

In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to respond when students say, “I don’t care,” dismiss suggestions, or have difficulty participating in school tasks. This session focuses on understanding the student’s experience, identifying barriers, and building a collaborative plan that supports connection, confidence, and engagement.

Participants will examine how task demands, unclear starting points, expectations of failure, perceived relevance, relationships, and practical barriers can influence participation. We’ll practice counseling conversations that explore the student’s perspective, distinguish how much an outcome matters from how possible it feels, and identify a manageable next step without requiring enthusiasm before offering support.

Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will learn to match support to the barrier and translate a counseling conversation into a workable school action. The session also addresses coordination with teachers and caregivers, monitoring student experience alongside participation, and recognizing when a plan needs adjustment or additional assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate possible barriers to school participation using student perspectives, task observations, context, and relevant information from adults.

  • Demonstrate a collaborative counseling conversation that explores mixed feelings, distinguishes importance from confidence, and identifies a supported school action.

  • Develop and review a brief participation plan that includes student and adult responsibilities, observable measures, and criteria for adjustment or additional assessment.
