Program Description
In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore how to support students through exclusion, rejection, and changing friendships—especially when restoring the relationship is uncertain, unwanted, or inappropriate. This session focuses on acknowledging the loss, understanding the situation, and helping students build a practical plan for coping, boundaries, and school connection.
Participants will learn to distinguish friendship changes, reciprocal conflict, and possible targeted harm when choosing an appropriate response. We’ll examine how to support students who want a friendship back, help students take responsibility without expecting forgiveness, and respect personal boundaries while maintaining expectations for respectful treatment.
Through elementary and middle school case examples, modeled counseling conversations, and guided application, participants will practice responding to friendship hurt without promising reconciliation. The session also addresses lunch and classroom participation, digital spillover, coordination with teachers and caregivers, and follow-up that considers both student coping and adult responsibilities for addressing harmful behavior.
