Program Description

In this one-hour professional development webinar, school counselors will explore the evidence base for skill generalization and discover why transfer does not happen automatically following skill instruction. Participants will leave with a practical framework for helping students apply counseling skills beyond the counseling office and into the environments where they matter most.

This session examines the research behind skill transfer and provides practical tools for increasing the likelihood that students will use newly learned skills across settings, situations, and relationships. Participants will learn how to intentionally plan for generalization, create meaningful between-session practice opportunities, and collaborate with teachers and caregivers to reinforce skill use in everyday contexts.

Learning Objectives

  • Design a practical generalization plan for a current student using the Generalization Planning Map.

  • Implement between-session skill practice in a structured, reviewed, and collaboratively designed format.

  • Identify specific roles for teachers and parents/caregivers in supporting skill transfer across settings.
